Well, I love love love New Orleans-style jazz. Lots of horns & whatnot. That is nothing new, though I have been more proactive about it over the last year or two. But the impetus for this new interest was sparked by Miles Davis, specifically a) a record that my husband bought of Miles & Monk at Newport (recorded in 1958 and 1963,respectively) that I can't get enough of, which led me to b) finally listen to Miles Davis's autobiography. When I wrote this post, I had made it to ~1958,so I'm listening to stuff like that (bebop, cool jazz, etc) at the mo.
P. S. It's good to see you here, do you read regularly or sporadically?
I'm so with you on the horns. Most songs are improved with the addition of a horn section, in my estimation. Though I took a class on it in college, I've still never really been taken with much jazz beyond the early '40s. I know remarkably little about your own musical tastes, but would you say that you like jam bands? I decidedly don't, and I wonder if that has any correlation to my lack of interest in bebob and beyond. (I'm not disparaging that sort of music at all, just saying it's not my speed. I'm a little straightforward in my tastes, honestly. I want to clap to an obvious rhythm and I want to sing harmony, mostly.)
And yeah, I check in every day or two and comment if I have anything moderately useful to add, but I very rarely post anymore. I'm the worst kind of internet user: "It's just not the same without everyone posting all the time" she says, lurking.
(PS - I JUST NOW figured out that LJ no longer allows subject lines for comments. I...it used to, right? Am I misremembering that?)
I can't tell if you're sincere or sarcastic. I do think it's a great thing, though! I feel so grown-up and sophisticated. At this rate I'll like every kind of music by the time I'm dead!
I was hoping you'd chime in!! I dunno what classic stuff should I make sure not to miss? And who are some contemporary people I could possibly see in person?
Really well! I still really like jazz, though I don't know much more about it than I used to.
Mostly I listen to jazz records. That is, when I'm at home, we usually listen to records, and 90% of the time I put on jazz. I don't have many jazz mp3s though, so when I'm away from home, I usually listen to an audiobook or something more modern.
My most listened-to album is definitely The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan. I put that shit on ALL. THE. TIME. Never gets old.
Two Christmases ago Chris consulted some sort of expert and bought me a shit-ton of jazz albums that one HAS to own. So that was pretty cool. I like a lot of stuff that just happened to be recorded at the Newport Jazz Fest? So I really want to go to that. Hopefully this year. I think they actually still have jazz there, as opposed to the one in New Orleans, which seems to be mostly . . . not that. They have bigger mainstream people. (Although I think the clubs go crazy during the Fest, and also maybe the side stages are good? I dunno.)
